Michigan Law Maker Wants to Arm Educators

Here is another current event. Some of you might have heard about this already, but now you can say what you think. (Oh I found this event while searching for a current event article for Government class. Who said school can't help in real life?)

Due to current events, a lawmaker in Michigan wants to arm specially trained faculty. Over the past years, about 50 students have been killed because of shootings in schools. The idea grew out of events like the shooting at Virginia Tech where 32 people were shot dead. Other events like, the shooting in the Amish school in Lancaster County, Pa. resulting in the death of 5 girls and the shooting at Columbine High School in Colorado resulting in the death of 13 people. With these events in mind, Agema filed a bill that would allow properly trained gun-owning faculty and staff that hold permits to pack concealed pistols inside a school or on school property. This proposed legislation would allowed parents or guardians of students whom already posses gun permits to carry guns on their person when picking up or dropping of students. It would also allow faculty and staff members to carry concealed weapons at the principal’s discretion.

Ok so I have one more short opinion.

I believe that if the faculty is well trained with the weapon, then he/she should be allowed to carry it on their person. Yet the gun owner should also get extensive background checks and have to have it locked in their desk. The idea and propose is well thought up and hopefully the law is passed.

Now its your turn. What do you think?

I agree with the teen advocate. However, I believe that we better do a bit more research before we issue permits. Again the thought applies, if you know that someone else in the class might just stop your shooting spree or bullying with a gun of their own, just maybe that person will think twice about it. By acting as if we condone behavior like that, we are handing lunatics a gun. In the end they get what they really wanted. 15 minutes of fame, but at what cost.

I don't mean to be rude, but I hope I can help clarify part of the orrigional posting. If you ask any Police officer, lawyer, or anyone who has a valid Concealed Pistol Licence(CPL) in Michigan, they will tell you that you can allready have a concealed pistol on school grounds, so long as you stay in the parking lot and/or in your car
thanks, phil
